Would having water generate only in the areas needed improve performance? I notice sometimes when I die I see underneath the ground and it’s filled with water. What kind of performance hit does that have?

theres some reason for this i dont remember what it is
my guess is that it’s less resource intensive to just have water at a set level map-wide than to have to determine where water needs to be generated.
Not so much as less resource intensive as it is just easier to cover it up like a bandaid (land) with the reasoning you stated. Unforunately it is still there eating up processing power. If you start up your own server, go into noclip, and go into the underground water. The game even thinks you’re underwater.
