Re-implement old maps (with fog of war) or get rid of maps completely#3922

There’s basically no more sense of exploration in the game anymore which was one of the reasons I personally feel why old Rust was great.

Gone are the days of getting lost on the island, far from home, and needing to build temporary shelter for the night, which was thrilling. The days of planning before going out/roaming and memorising land forms and points of interest are numbered. The satisfaction of finding a sought for radtown or building location is gone. Remember the time when you couldn’t straight up open chat and type “there’s a door camper retard at F14” or “lol raid at H3 come counter”. Now all you need to do is hold G.

Having an unobscured map even makes the scale of islands feel small because you know where each side ends.

From what I believe, the devs implemented unobscured maps because of third parties offering ways of seeing a clear view of the map by generating the map’s seed. However, surely there is a way to counter this, to make Rust obtain one of its long lost traits again.

I agree but realisticly what you’re suggesting is not going to happen. As much as I miss some of the more hardcore survival parts of simpler 2016 Rust we’re not going to get that back because now it’s about content and convenience and comfortable hands to hold on to when things get tough. The game had so little content then too compared to now yet the previous player peak record was at that exact time so they were definitely doing something right.
