The idea of nuclear energy was discussed 5 years ago, but it was less relevant back then due to low energy demands. Now, with increasing energy requirements, installing numerous wind turbines and solar panels in open areas seems questionable. Instead, a nuclear power plant could be introduced, consisting of several large structures (reactor, pump, heat exchanger, turbine) occupying significant space on a base to make maintenance more challenging. Its functionality could be adapted from popular games that also feature nuclear energy systems.
A reactor doesn’t have to be overly complex or inefficient — many players prefer simplicity. A common question is whether a reactor can explode. The answer is both yes and no. In reality, it depends on the design. Most of the time, reactors simply melt down, while explosions usually occur due to sudden pressure surges caused by extreme temperatures
I suggest using the logic of large furnaces: the reactor can only be placed on the ground, occupying a 2x2 foundation, with the option to assemble it in parts.
The implementation can also differ significantly from my suggestions
Finding, for example, reactor parts or the fuel itself can be realized in different ways. But I would advise you to first add items of the appropriate category to the vending machines at the outpost
All my suggestions may differ from your ideas. Suggest your own ideas. We need to develop this topic
As someone who is working in the nuclear industry i kinda like this idea. But maybe by splitting the whole thing into sections may make it way too complex for the average joe. I think its better to be added as something passive like a windmill but still requiring some fissile material, similar to how a generator works now in game with low grade fuel.
The size requirements seem reasonable with your suggestion of a 2by2.
Alternatively could introduce RTG (Radioisotope thermoelectric generator) which would require less space but would also generate a lower power.
I personally think something the size of a 2x2 is a little too big, so I say make it a bit smaller. But I can see this working if they just let the radioactive water to be used as fuel for this thing at a higher efficiency.
I can’t imagine this ever actually being added but it’s a cool idea.
As for the explosion, I would minimize its effects. At least don’t contaminate the terrain - it can be very disruptive to players, especially on small or medium-sized maps. In general, I don’t see blowing up the reactor as an option - I’d suggest melting down the hull instead.
For those who like to explode, I would suggest a server variable that can be customized:
First of all, I would implement buying fuel and equipment through an outpost by creating a trading post.
Then, as Robert already suggested, we could introduce an appropriate category of loot at the nuclear plant, cargo ship, military tunnels, missile silo, underwater lab
Larry Rowe has accurately described the basic need. A nuclear reactor is more necessary for clans. Instead of placing multiple towers for each wind turbine, we could place a reactor. This would both optimize labor and productivity on the customer side.
We use the 2x2 reactor for clans - with all the advantages and disadvantages described above, it is suitable for large clan bases.
The proposed 1x2 reactor is for smaller bases, or solo players so they can afford to try it too
I would also like to hear from people who don’t like the idea. Perhaps we should always try to find a compromise, and if you don’t like the current idea, suggest your own
The basic idea is to create an energy source that players won’t avoid for fear of high risks, but also were careful to use so that the reactor vessel doesn’t melt down at an inconvenient moment
Are there any other suggestions?
How will we dispose the nuclear waste from the nuclear reactor? Maybe we can use it to create a dirty bomb?
The waste could be recycled, and it would return spent fuel and metal/scrap byproduct (since fuel rods are often tubes filled with pellets). It could be used to create a Rad Rocket, irradiating for a short period wherever you shoot it. Use it to assist during a raid, but as a downside you can’t go near it either. I also want to add that I think handling fuel without a hazmat suit equipped should give the player rads.
