Add a fishing rod that will allow newly spawned players to gain some food and hunger, and for roleplayers to have a good time.
It should be a more effective choice compared to the survival fish trap, which currently is garbage. They should not be expensive to craft and would be usable in both rivers and the sea.
When floating items and player bags eventually become a thing, the rod could instead be used as a tool for catching those.
This would definitely make for an interesting new mechanic inside the game.

I agree, they could also add a function to use spears to catch fish, that also connects to the idea of adding more primitive items
